The Çavuşin Church is situated at a distance of 2.5 km from Göreme on the road between Göreme and Avanos. The church was constructed by carving into a massive rock, with two floors. The lower floor contains monk rooms. The natural staircase leading to the upper floor of the church has not survived to the present day. The church can be accessed today via an iron staircase constructed at a later date. The narthex of the church, which has a very high single nave, has been largely destroyed. The narthex displays depictions of archangels. The church was constructed in 964/965 CE, following the visit of the Eastern Roman Emperor Nicephorus Phocas to Cappadocia. The church contains images of Emperor Nicephorus Phocas, his wife Teofano, and other members of their family. The walls of the church are decorated with frescoes, some of which are in an extremely well-preserved state.
